MISSION
The Village is
a collection of original, replica and reconstructed 18th and 19th century
structures. While most of the buildings have been relocated to the site,
others were constructed here. They represent the vernacular architecture
typical of farm and merchant communities of central New Jersey.
The Village functions
as an educational model, dedicated to teaching the history, traditions,
folk arts and craftsmanship of the people who lived and worked throughout
the region. It will offer public programs in the highest standard of
excellence, among them: educational workshops, seminars and lectures,
in-service training for teachers, exhibitions, concerts, community gatherings
and theme based projects.
The recently completed
renovation and restoration work converted five structures into model
facilities for educational activities and programs following Americans
with Disability Act (ADA) guidelines. They are: New Brunswick Barracks,
Runyon House, Vanderveer House, Fitzrandolph House, Smalleytown Schoolhouse.
See Access for more details.
PROGRAMS
The staff has been
busy planning displays, workshops and events focusing upon central New
Jersey's agricultural roots and relationship to the soil. In addition,
there will be seasonal programs, such as the Pysanki (egg decorating)
workshop in March, a Mother's Day program in May, a Bell choir concert
in June, a look at African-American cemeteries in New Jersey in July,
and the installation of a permanent exhibit about the community of Raritan
Landing, in May which will coincide with the publication of a collection
of "first hand" accounts by Raritan Landing merchants.
For brochures on
these upcoming events, email
us and request to be put on the EJOT mailing list.
LIBRARY
The village is developing
an archive and lending library of published materials relating to central
New Jersey and compiling first hand accounts and oral histories. The
library is also home to a free public access computer to the Internet
provided through a grant from the Benton
Foundation and National Endowment
for the Arts. The information available through this computer will
provide visitors with a high tech cultural resource at the East Jersey
Olde Towne Village. In fact, you are visiting the website made possible
by the Benton Foundation Open
Studio Arts Online funding. If you or your organization would like
to donate materials to the library, please contact Village Staff at
732-745-3030.
