As reported in the June 2004 Journal of the American Medical Association, mental illnesses are among the most prevalent health problems in America today. Research has demonstrated that treatment can be successful and recovery is possible. Working closely with citizen and professional advisory boards, the Middlesex County Division of Behavioral Health & Children's Services:

  • Plans, monitors, and promotes mental health services and community education, with a focus on recovery awareness, prevention, cultural competence, and de-stigmatization
  • Monitors State and County funded agencies
  • Provides information and referral regarding the continuum of care

VETERAN'S MENTAL HEALTH HELPLINE

A mental health helpline has been established by the NJ Division of Mental Health Services for returning veterans. The new toll-free number provides immediate assistance to veterans suffering from emotional or psychological distress, as well as those having difficulty re-assimilating into civilian life after their mobilization for active duty service ends.

You may reach the helpline 24 hours, 7 days a week, by dialing 1-866 VETS-NJ4U (1-866-838-7654).

The helpline, coordinated by the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ/University Behavioral HealthCare, features peer counseling, clinical assessment, and assistance to family members. The helpline provides New Jersey veterans and their families access to a comprehensive Mental Health Provider Network of mental health professionals specializing in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other veterans' issues. All services are free and confidential.
