Middlesex County’s
Plays-in-the-Park is a unique partnership that represents better than
44 years of unparalleled government initiative, artistic excellence and
community spirit.
In the 1960’s, the
Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders recognized the importance
of bringing Broadway caliber musical theater to the County in a
beautiful setting and at rates that would encourage families to share
in the experience. The
Freeholder's support and the dedication of countless staff members and
volunteers, has enabled the program to grow in size and in popularity.
Plays-in-the-Park has provided a showcase for local talent,
both on stage and backstage, and has been an important part of the
impetus that propelled many gifted individuals into careers in
professional theater.
Since it
began it is estimated that more than a million people have attended
performances at our state-of-the-art Stephen J. Capestro Amphitheater
in Roosevelt Park, Edison, New Jersey. Plays-in-the-Park started as a
summer program, but has expanded to a year round theatrical
treasure. Three full-scale Broadway-style musicals are presented each
summer, an indoor Children’s Musical takes to the stage in the fall,
and our continuing production of “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor
Dreamcoat” is performed each winter at the State Theater in New
Brunswick.
With the
continued backing of the Board of Chosen Freeholders the program has
flourished and recent seasons have brought major changes and
improvements to our sound system, lighting equipment and audience
accommodations.
If you
haven’t had the chance to join our audiences, you don’t know what
you’re missing! Imagine a warm summer evening, with stars twinkling
overhead and top quality, affordable, entertainment for you to enjoy
with your family and friends. By all means, we encourage you to try
it. Rest assured, you won’t be disappointed.
